Overview

The ZWO Seestar S50 is a fully automated smart telescope designed to remove the technical barriers that stop most beginners from actually using their equipment. With a 50mm apochromatic refractor at f/5 and a 250mm focal length, it is not a powerhouse for resolving fine planetary detail, but it performs genuinely well on nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters when used with its built-in live stacking system. You control everything through a smartphone app, which handles alignment, GoTo slewing, tracking, and automatic image stacking without any manual input from you.

The Alt-Az mount keeps the footprint small and the weight at just 3kg, making it realistic to carry to a dark site. The apochromatic design keeps chromatic aberration controlled, which matters when you are stacking multiple exposures and color fringing would otherwise compound. The tradeoff is aperture: 50mm gathers limited light, so faint targets require patience and good conditions.

For someone who wants a reliable, portable system that produces real astrophotography results on the first night out, without collimation, polar alignment, or a separate camera setup, the Seestar S50 is a serious option.

Key Features

  • Built-in live stacking produces shareable astrophotos without any separate software or camera
  • Apochromatic optics reduce color fringing, improving image quality during multi-frame stacking sessions
  • Smartphone app handles all alignment, tracking, and GoTo targeting automatically
  • At 3kg and a compact form factor, it travels easily to darker skies
  • Alt-Az GoTo mount is accurate enough for automated target acquisition on deep-sky objects
  • 50mm aperture is a real limitation on faint or small targets, best managed by extending session length under dark skies
  • At $499, it undercuts most comparable smart telescope options while delivering a complete, ready-to-use system
