On 23 July 2026, ZWO received an FCC equipment authorization for a device it describes only as a "Smart Telescope". The filing is public and dated. Coverage of ZWO's next smart telescope has so far cited patent filings and unnamed industry sources, with at least one outlet noting in its latest update that FCC documents had not appeared yet.
We are not going to tell you what the product is called or what aperture it has, because the filing does not say. What it does say is worth reading carefully, because it is authorized on 5 GHz bands that no shipping Seestar uses.
What the filing actually is
The FCC ID is 2A7R3-SEESTARS50, filed by SUZHOU ZWO CO., LTD.
The first thing to get straight is that this is a separate certification from the Seestar S50 you can buy today. The shipping S50 was certified almost three years earlier, on 12 September 2023, under a different FCC ID: 2A7R3-SEESTAR. A product code is a designation the applicant chooses; it identifies the equipment covered by the authorization, not the name a product is eventually sold under. The string "S50" appearing in this one does not make it the S50 on shelves.
So we have two separate certifications from the same company, three years apart, for devices both described as smart telescopes.
The certified radio configuration is different
Anything with a radio is tested and authorized band by band, with the measured output power on record. The band list does not identify a chipset, but it does establish, from a primary source, exactly which frequency ranges a device is authorized to transmit on.

Every previously certified smart telescope in our tracker uses the same narrow pair of 5 GHz bands. The new filing is the only one that adds 5500-5700 MHz, and the only one certified across the full 5150-5350 MHz range rather than just 5180-5240.
That 5500-5700 MHz band is U-NII-2C. Operating there requires Dynamic Frequency Selection, the scheme that keeps WiFi clear of radar, including weather and military systems, by vacating a channel when radar is present. That is a more demanding certification than the bands the current Seestars are authorized on. The certified output there is 0.0147 W, under FCC Part 15E, the rule part covering U-NII devices.
DFS support is not something a manufacturer certifies casually. It is fair to read this as a different radio configuration from the shipping Seestars; it is not proof, on its own, of a different physical product.
What this filing does not tell you
This is the part most rumour coverage gets wrong, so we will be blunt about it.
The filing does not confirm a product name. It does not say "Pro" anywhere. The product code is a string ZWO chose.
It does not reveal aperture, focal length, sensor, mount type, battery, price or release date. Equipment authorization tests radio compliance, and the technical exhibits evaluate nothing about optics. A user manual can of course describe a product more broadly, but this filing's manual is not public yet. If you see an optical spec table attributed to "the FCC filing", it is not coming from this document.
It does not prove the device will ship, or ship in this form. Certification is a prerequisite for sale in the US, not a commitment.
What it does establish, on the public record: by 23 July 2026 ZWO had submitted a smart telescope for radio testing, and the configuration authorized differs from every Seestar currently on sale.
Why a grant date is worth watching
Certification has to happen before a device can be sold in the US, so a grant is often the earliest dated public record that a device has reached the testing stage.
We can put a number on the gap using our own tracker rather than guessing. DWARFLAB's DWARF mini was certified on 12 February 2026. Press coverage of its launch had appeared by 28 April 2026. That is about 75 days from grant to the point the product was being written about publicly.
One data point is not a rule, and lead times vary with manufacturing, stock and market. We are not going to turn it into a release date. The useful part is simpler: a certification is a dated public record, where a leaked spec sheet is not.
There is a second date already on the calendar
Manufacturers can ask the FCC to keep the revealing exhibits confidential for a fixed period. ZWO did, and the period ends.
On 19 January 2027, the internal photos, external photos and user manual attached to 2A7R3-SEESTARS50 become public automatically. In filings generally, internal photos show the circuit boards and manuals identify the product, so that release is likely to be more informative than the grant itself, though we will not know until it happens.
The date itself is not a rumour or an expectation. It is a scheduled release already recorded in the filing.
What we would tell you to do about it
Nothing, honestly. If you want a smart telescope now, the Seestar S50 and the smaller-aperture Seestar S30 are both shipping products that work exactly as well today as they did last month. Our smart telescope buying guide covers how they compare with the DWARF and Vaonis alternatives.
If you were already inclined to wait, this is at least a dated, primary-source data point rather than another anonymous spec rumour.
