Overview

The AstroMaster 130EQ-MD is a 130mm f/5 Newtonian reflector that gives beginning astronomers a meaningful step up from smaller starter scopes. The 130mm aperture gathers enough light to show Saturn's rings, Jupiter's cloud bands and moons, lunar craters in sharp detail, and larger deep-sky objects like the Andromeda Galaxy and the Orion Nebula. At f/5, the focal ratio is reasonably fast, which helps with wider fields of view on deep-sky targets. The German equatorial mount is the standout feature at this price.

Combined with the included RA motor drive, it tracks objects automatically as Earth rotates, so you spend less time nudging the scope and more time actually observing. This matters most when using higher magnifications, where objects drift out of view quickly without tracking. Slow-motion control knobs on both axes make precise centering straightforward. A few honest caveats: the included eyepieces are functional but basic, and most observers will want to add a quality eyepiece over time.

The StarPointer red dot finder is adequate for bright targets but requires some practice. At 7.71kg, the complete setup is portable but not ultralight. For around $300, this is a capable, genuinely usable instrument for someone serious about learning the night sky.

Awesome telescope! For beginners

Long but hopefully informative review. Honestly, this thing can be easy and can be a pain to assemble at the same time. The majority of it was honestly put together for me. I got it with the motor drive, which was already set on. I did still look up on YouTube on how to put it together because instr...

Not bad -- motor is practically useless, though

Pros: * Once it's set up, it produces some nice imagery. The views are relatively clear. * If you set up the red dot finder correctly (YouTube it), you can find pretty much any major star you could see easily with the naked eye. Don't expect anything more, though. * Price -- If you're using this rev...

Good Starter Telescope, Great Upgrade

Great first reflector, I have two refractors. EQ mount will require practice if you have never used one. Good laser dot spotter scope, take the time to align it at higher magnification. Alignment wheels cannot be locked, I secure with tape after aligning. Invest in zoom and Barlow lenses; eliminates...
