Overview
The NexStar Evolution 8 is a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope with a 203mm aperture and 2032mm focal length at f/10, giving it real light-gathering power for deep-sky objects and excellent resolution on planetary detail. The compact SCT design keeps the tube manageable despite the aperture, though the full system weighs 31.3kg, so you will want help moving it or a permanent setup location. What sets this scope apart from other GoTo telescopes is the integrated lithium-ion battery, which provides up to 10 hours of observing without hunting for power outlets or carrying external battery packs.
The computerized GoTo mount uses brass worm gears for improved tracking accuracy and reduced backlash, which matters when you are doing long visual sessions or attempting basic astrophotography on brighter targets. Control comes through Celestron's SkyPortal app over Wi-Fi, letting you point the telescope at thousands of objects from your phone. The mount also includes manual clutches, so you can move the scope by hand when needed.
At around $2,000, this is a significant investment, and beginners should know the f/10 focal ratio limits wide-field viewing, but for planetary work and globular clusters, it genuinely delivers.

Why I Upgraded: About two years ago, I purchased a EQ mounted reflector, a Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ MD. Knowing that it was an entry level model, I wanted to learn more about telescopes and decide if it was something in which I wished to invest. That scope was easy to move outside when the time w...
