Overview

The StarSense Explorer 10-inch Dobsonian occupies an interesting position in the market: it offers the raw optical performance of a large aperture instrument while removing one of the biggest frustrations beginners face, which is actually finding things in the sky. The 254mm parabolic mirror at f/4.7 gathers enough light to reveal Jupiter's cloud bands, Saturn's Cassini Division, and faint deep-sky objects like galaxy clusters and planetary nebulae. From a dark site, the views are genuinely impressive. The StarSense system works differently from typical phone-based planetarium apps.

Rather than relying on your phone's gyroscope alone, it uses image recognition to analyze actual star patterns overhead and calculate where the telescope is pointing. You follow arrows on the screen until a bullseye turns green, then look through the eyepiece. It is not motorized, so you still nudge the telescope manually, but the guidance system makes that simple enough for a first-time observer. At just under 25kg, this is not a travel scope.

It is a backyard instrument that rewards regular use. The Crayford focuser handles standard 1.25-inch and 2-inch eyepieces, giving you room to upgrade as your skills develop. For the price, the combination of aperture and usability is difficult to match.

Key Features

  • The 254mm aperture collects significantly more light than 6-inch or 8-inch alternatives, making faint nebulae and galaxies genuinely visible rather than barely detectable
  • StarSense sky recognition navigates using real star patterns overhead, not gyroscope drift, which makes locating targets reliably accurate even for complete beginners
  • The manual Dobsonian mount is stable and requires no power source, batteries, or polar alignment to operate
  • Crayford focuser accepts both 1.25-inch and 2-inch eyepieces, so your accessory collection can grow with your experience
  • At f/4.7, the optical system is reasonably fast, which benefits wide-field views but may require careful collimation to maintain sharp edge-to-edge images
  • The assembled weight of nearly 25kg means this telescope is best suited to a fixed backyard setup rather than regular transport to dark sites
  • Celestron includes a 2-year warranty and US-based support, which matters when you are learning and troubleshooting equipment for the first time

Excellent Scope!

This is a FANTASTIC DOB telescope! I recommend this wholeheartedly and without reservation. This is a great DOB telescope. I would like to tell you about it here. First things first - the StarSense application is tremendously fun and educational for exploring the sky (as is SkySafari - consider this...

Killer Scope. Finds Everything, Even With Bad Eyesight.

The media could not be loaded. Most astronomers will recommend you start with a 6" or 8" dobsonian. I've had refractors before, but this is my first reflector. I cannot stress enough how enjoyable this scope is to use and view the heavens with. It comes with a decent Omni Plossl in 25mm focal length...

Good scope for the price

I bought this last October and have used it multiple times looking at the moon, a few planets, and I even saw a nebula. I'm a bit of a klutz and I know very little about the stars but I'm learning with this scope. The moon is very bright in the scope because of its high magnification so for viewing ...
