Overview

The Celestron AstroMaster 130EQ is a 130mm f/5 Newtonian reflector that gives beginning astronomers a genuine step up in capability over smaller department-store scopes. The 130mm aperture collects enough light to show Saturn's rings, Jupiter's cloud bands and moons, detailed lunar craters, and fainter deep-sky targets like the Andromeda Galaxy and the Orion Nebula. At 650mm focal length, it handles both wide star fields and reasonably close planetary views. The German equatorial mount is the standout practical feature here.

Unlike a basic alt-azimuth setup, it lets you track objects across the sky with a single slow-motion knob once polar aligned, which makes a real difference when observing at higher magnifications. Setup is straightforward and requires no tools. Two eyepieces are included, giving you 32x and 65x magnification to start. The included StarPointer red dot finder helps with initial aiming.

One honest note: like all fast Newtonians, this scope will benefit from occasional mirror collimation, which is a simple skill worth learning early. Overall, this is a capable, well-priced instrument for someone ready to move beyond casual stargazing.

Key Features

  • 130mm aperture gathers noticeably more light than entry-level 60mm or 70mm refractors
  • German equatorial mount allows single-axis tracking, making it easier to follow objects at higher magnifications
  • Two included eyepieces provide 32x and 65x magnification straight out of the box
  • Aluminum and SiO2 mirror coatings improve brightness and contrast compared to standard coatings
  • No-tool assembly means you can be observing within minutes of opening the box
  • At under $300, it offers aperture and mount quality that punches well above its price point
  • Mirror collimation is occasionally needed, but is a straightforward process that any beginner can learn

Great telescope to get beginner interested in hobby

So there's been a lot of discussion in the reviews about if this is a beginner telescope or not. As a person who never touched a telescope (except maybe in high school a thousand years ago) until I decided it was something I wanted to try out this year, I emphatically say YES! This is a great beginn...

Excellent astronomic equipment and good price

Already I have had opportunity to do a few tests of this telescope and can comment to them that the image is excellent. The construction and the design is robust enough. Only I found two negative details of design. First the screw that is used for adjustment of this latitude evil designed. When one ...
