Overview
The Baader Hyperion 5mm is a short-focal-length eyepiece designed for observers who want high magnification without sacrificing field of view. At 5mm, it delivers substantial power on any telescope, making it well-suited for planetary detail, lunar craters, and splitting close double stars. The 68-degree apparent field of view is genuinely generous at this focal length, where many competing eyepieces narrow down considerably. One practical strength is the dual-barrel design.
The eyepiece fits both 1.25-inch and 2-inch focusers without adapters, which is convenient if you use multiple telescopes or plan to upgrade your setup later. Baader's PHANTOM-GROUP multi-coatings are applied to all optical surfaces, which helps maintain contrast and brightness even at high magnification. This matters more at 5mm than at longer focal lengths, where light transmission losses become more noticeable. At $196, it sits in the mid-to-upper range for 1.25-inch eyepieces.
It is worth noting that at 5mm, eye relief will be limited, which can be a challenge for eyeglass wearers. The modular design also allows fine-tuning rings (sold separately) to shift the effective focal length, adding some flexibility if you want to experiment with different magnification ranges.

I have an 8 inch Dobsonian that came with a 9mm eyepiece. My old eyepiece has significantly less eye relief making it difficult for those I observe with to use. So I decided to purchase this Baader 5mm Hyperion to solve my eye relief problem as well as to provide me with more magnification. I am bey...
Update 1/15/19 I recently spent an entire evening looking at the moon, M42, Betelgeuse, Rigel and Mars with a variety of eyepieces, my fantasy of looking elsewhere shattered by clouds. I compared the Baader Hyperion Aspheric with shorter focal length eyepieces with comparable fields of view, an unfa...
There was about 1-2 grams of grease towards the bottom of the eyepiece. It was located where the eyepiece narrows from the 2" to the 1.25" profile. The grease had an orange color and was reminiscent of clean motor oil. I wiped this off with a paper towel no problem. Looking at another reviewers comm...
