Overview
The Tele Vue Nagler Type-6 3.5mm is a specialist eyepiece built for one thing: squeezing the most detail out of planets and the Moon at high magnification. Paired with a typical 8-inch f/6 reflector, for example, you are looking at around 343x, which is serious power for tracking Saturn's Cassini Division or resolving fine lunar craters. What separates this from cheaper alternatives is the combination of that 82-degree apparent field of view and edge-to-edge sharpness across all 7 fully multi-coated lens elements.
At this focal length, wide fields are genuinely rare, and Tele Vue pulls it off without the coma or field curvature that plagues budget wide-angle eyepieces at high power. The 12mm of eye relief is reasonable for a 3.5mm eyepiece, though eyeglass wearers may still find the field slightly cropped depending on their prescription. The 4.8mm field stop keeps the image well-defined and minimizes distortions toward the edges.
At $381, this is a serious investment, but it reflects precision optics that will outlast most telescopes in your collection. It is worth considering only if high-power planetary and lunar work is a regular part of your observing sessions.
Key Features
- Delivers genuine 82-degree apparent field of view with edge-to-edge sharpness, uncommon at this focal length
- Fully multi-coated 7-element design maximizes contrast and light transmission for bright, detailed planetary views
- 12mm eye relief reduces fatigue during extended high-power sessions, though eyeglass wearers should test before committing
- 4.8mm field stop diameter minimizes edge aberrations and keeps the image well-defined across the full field
- Blackened lens edges and anti-reflection threads actively suppress internal reflections and improve contrast
- Pairs best with telescopes in the f/6 to f/10 range where its sharpness and correction are most effective
- Built to Tele Vue's long-standing quality standard, making it a durable long-term addition to any eyepiece collection

You’ll need a steady tripod, but this eyepiece is amazing Televue rules when it comes to eyepieces.
While the weather has not been very cooperative this fall, first light with this eyepiece was spell-binding. It is truly like a picture window on the universe. I'm saving up for my next purchase, a 26mm Nagler.
This eyepiece exceeded my expectation with a view that is exceptional. It is constructed to provide many years of service.
