Overview
The Explore Scientific FirstLight 80mm refractor gives beginners and casual observers a genuinely capable instrument without demanding a significant financial commitment. The 80mm aperture gathers enough light to show lunar craters in sharp detail, split many double stars, and reveal Jupiter's cloud bands and Galilean moons on steady nights. Deep sky objects like the Orion Nebula and Pleiades are accessible, though you should temper expectations for faint galaxies given the modest aperture.
The Twilight Nano alt-azimuth mount is smooth enough for visual tracking, and the included 25mm Plossl eyepiece provides a solid starting magnification. The 40mm draw tube focuser gives you enough travel to dial in focus comfortably, and the 90-degree diagonal makes viewing at higher elevations far more comfortable than a straight-through setup would allow. The included smartphone camera adapter is a practical addition for beginners wanting to capture lunar images without investing in dedicated astrophotography equipment.
Keep in mind that alt-az mounts are not suited for long-exposure deep sky photography. At 8.05kg total, the package is portable enough to carry to a dark site. For under $200, this setup offers honest value as a first telescope.

This is a surprisingly good telescope considering the low $200 cost. It's focuser and the tube clamp mount is made of plastic, but a very high quality plastic. The images it produces @ 26x with the supplied 25mm Plossl eyepiece are virtually color-free and very sharp. The 80mm f8 (640mm fl) achro le...
