Overview
The Tele Vue Ethos 8mm is one of the most respected high-power eyepieces available to amateur astronomers, and for good reason. Its 100-degree apparent field of view at 8mm focal length is a genuinely rare combination, giving you both magnification and immersion that few eyepieces can match. When you point this at Jupiter, the Great Red Spot and cloud band detail snap into view with a sharpness that holds edge to edge across that enormous field. On the Moon, crater walls and rilles reveal texture that feels almost three-dimensional.
The 15mm of eye relief makes extended observing sessions comfortable, and eyeglass wearers will appreciate not having to choose between their prescription and a quality view. The dual 1.25-inch and 2-inch barrel design means it works across a wide range of telescope setups without adapters. At $700, this is a serious investment, and it is worth being clear about that. This eyepiece rewards telescopes with good optics and solid mounts.
On a shaky or poorly collimated scope, those dollars are not fully realized. But for an observer ready to commit to premium gear, the Ethos 8mm delivers views that genuinely change how you experience the night sky.
Key Features
- 100-degree apparent field of view at 8mm creates a deeply immersive, high-magnification experience uncommon in this focal length range
- Fully multi-coated optics deliver high contrast and sharp detail from center to edge, even on demanding targets like planets and globular clusters
- 15mm eye relief supports comfortable viewing during long sessions, including for observers who wear eyeglasses
- Dual 1.25-inch and 2-inch barrel compatibility makes this eyepiece usable across a broad range of telescopes without additional adapters
- Parfocal with several other Tele Vue eyepiece lines, reducing refocusing time when swapping between focal lengths during a session
- Lighter and more compact than the 13mm Ethos, making it a practical choice for binocular viewers and travel setups

This is a superb eyepiece! Optically close to perfect, this eyepiece shares much in common with it's 6mm sibling. This line of eyepieces allows you to similarly frame a DSO like a cluster or a galaxy at 2X the magnification that you'd get using a Plossl i.e. to frame a DSO the same way with a Plossl...
One of the best mid focal length mass produced eyepieces ever made (another one is TeleVue Ethos 13 mm). Totally worth money spent.
well I bought these pieces, I actually bought this one and the 13mm Ethos. I read the reviews and all the hoopla. But I didn't see it. These eyepieces are not any better than the ones I was using before I bought these. In fact I prefer the ones I had before I bought these. Only thing now is I'm $110...
