Comparison
The Celestron EdgeHD 925 OTA is the clear winner for virtually all amateur astronomers. The single most important differentiator is the performance gap in planetary and deep sky observation; the EdgeHD 925 scores 72 and 62 respectively, while the CGX-L 1100 scores a disappointing 23 and 23 despite its larger aperture. This dramatic difference reflects the CGX-L 1100's well-documented optical and mechanical issues that plague its usability.
The EdgeHD 925 also offers superior overall value at half the price, with an exceptional 78 overall score compared to the CGX-L 1100's 49. While neither telescope excels for beginners, the EdgeHD 925 maintains respectable scores across astrophotography (66) and portability (46) without the CGX-L 1100's crippling weaknesses. The only scenario favoring the CGX-L 1100 would be if someone specifically needed its 279mm aperture for extremely faint deep sky objects and was willing to accept severe compromises elsewhere, which we cannot recommend.
The Celestron EdgeHD 925 OTA should be purchased by nearly all amateur astronomers seeking reliable planetary, lunar, and deep sky observation within a reasonable budget. The Celestron CGX-L 1100 EdgeHD is not recommended for purchase at this time.
