Overview

The Sky-Watcher Classic 250 is a 254mm (10-inch) Newtonian reflector on a manual Dobsonian mount, and that aperture is the real story here. At this price point, no other design gives you this much light-gathering ability. You will resolve globular clusters into individual stars, pick out dust lanes in nearby galaxies, and see genuine detail in planetary nebulae that smaller scopes simply cannot reveal. Jupiter's cloud bands, Saturn's Cassini Division, and the polar ice caps on Mars are all well within reach on steady nights.

The fully multi-coated borosilicate mirrors with 94% reflectivity mean you are not losing much light before it reaches your eye, which matters more than most buyers realize. The 2-inch Crayford focuser handles both included eyepieces well, a 25mm for wide fields and a 10mm for higher magnification. The honest limitation is the weight. At 53 pounds fully assembled, this is not a grab-and-go scope. Breaking it into tube and base for transport is manageable, but plan accordingly.

The manual altitude and azimuth controls work smoothly thanks to Teflon bearings, though tracking objects at high magnification takes practice. For visual observing from a fixed backyard site, this telescope punches well above its price.

Key Features

  • A 254mm aperture delivers noticeably brighter, more detailed views than 6-inch or 8-inch alternatives at this price range
  • 94% reflective, fully multi-coated mirrors reduce light loss and improve contrast across all object types
  • Proprietary tension control handles allow smooth, controlled movements without requiring perfect tube balance
  • Teflon azimuth bearings provide consistent, low-friction motion that makes manual tracking less frustrating at higher magnifications
  • The 2-inch Crayford focuser accepts a wide range of eyepieces beyond the included 25mm and 10mm super wide-angle pair
  • A 9x50 straight-through finder scope is a practical choice for star-hopping to faint objects
  • The tube and base separate for transport, though combined weight of 53 pounds means this scope suits a dedicated backyard setup better than frequent travel

So far I am pleased with my new telescope

Bought a 10" Dobsonian Sky-Watcher. Came in yesterday at 6:00 pm; two days ahead of schedule. Also bought a Shorty 1.25 2X Barlow lens, a 2X 2" Focal Extender, and a LaserMate Deluxe II Telescope Laser Collimator. I'm thinking about the Q70 (70 degrees) set of three eyepieces or the Explore Scientif...

Pros and Cons

Pros and Cons Assembly: It arrived intact with all the parts accounted for. I managed to assemble it easy enough with the tools provided except for the screwdriver which does not have a rubber grip and is therefore very difficult to use. Size: The scope was actually smaller than I anticipated and mo...
