Overview
The Celestron Advanced VX 9.25" Schmidt-Cassegrain sits in an interesting spot in the lineup. At 235mm aperture and f/10, it pulls in 33% more light than an 8" scope, which makes a real difference when you are chasing faint nebulae or galaxies. Yet the optical tube stays manageable enough that one person can realistically set it up without help, which matters more than it sounds after a few late nights in the dark.
The Advanced VX equatorial mount carries the load well for visual observing and moderate imaging sessions. Its integer gear ratios and Periodic Error Correction help reduce the tracking errors that plague long-exposure photography, and the built-in autoguider port means you can connect a guide camera when you are ready to push exposure times further. StarBright XLT coatings improve light transmission through the optical path, which helps the aperture do its job.
That said, this is an f/10 system, so wide-field imaging is not its strength. It rewards patience with planetary detail and compact deep-sky objects. At $2,499, it asks for a real commitment, but for an intermediate astronomer ready to move beyond a starter setup, the optics and mount are genuinely capable.

Key Features
- 235mm aperture gathers enough light to reveal detail in galaxies, nebulae, and planetary surfaces
- Periodic Error Correction and integer gear ratios reduce tracking drift during long imaging sessions
- Autoguider port supports guided astrophotography when you are ready for that step
- StarBright XLT coatings improve light throughput across the optical system
- No single component exceeds 20 lbs, making solo transport and setup practical
- Equatorial mount provides accurate tracking suited to both visual use and photography
- The f/10 focal ratio favors high-magnification planetary and compact deep-sky work rather than wide-field imaging

Don't wait another minute, if you've been contemplating this scope. The optics and clarity are amazing. The Advanced VX mount is a joy. I might suggest the SkyPortal W-Fi Module, it makes alignment and controlling the mount so much easier. If you are not well versed in alignment I might also suggest...
I can now enjoy the universe
I Bought this scope in 2016. The tube assembly is a good scope but stay away from the AVX mount. The gears started clicking after about 3 months which caused the stars to jump around in the eyepiece. I returned the scope to Celestron for repairs and it was returned. Within a couple months it began c...
